Manchester United is an English Premier League football (soccer) club. It is based in Manchester, in the north-west of England. The team’s home ground is Old Trafford, and the club’s postal address is, Manchester United Football Club, Old Trafford, Sir Matt Busby Way, Manchester, M16 0RA, United Kingdom.

MUFC is owned by Malcolm Glazier. Its Chief Executive is David Gill. The team is managed by Sir Alex Ferguson and the club captain is Gary Neville. The traditional club colours are red, white and black (red shirts, white shorts). Free flowing, attacking football is the team’s classic style of play. The club’s nickname is ‘The Red Devils’.

Around the world, Manchester United is the best-known English football club. Within England it has the largest supporter-base and regularly fills Old Trafford. (The Old Trafford football ground is the biggest in the English Premier League, with a capacity of just over 76,000.) For some years, Manchester United has been one of the most successful English football teams. In the sixteen seasons of the present English Premier League (since 1992-93), Manchester United have been champions ten times. As well as being current champions (season 2007-08), the club is also the most recent winner of the UEFA Champions League (2007-08).

The club was founded in 1878. It was initially known as Newton Heath LYR (Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway). It first played as ‘Manchester United’ in 1902 and its first major success was in 1907-08, when the team won the English Football League Championship. The first match at Old Trafford was on 19 February 1910. (United lost 4-3 to neighbours, Liverpool.)

Manchester United came to international prominence through tragedy. In the 1950s, a young and talented team began to participate in European competition. On 6 February 1958, the airplane carrying the team back from a European fixture crashed on the runway in Munich, Germany. Twenty-three people died, including eight players. The then team manager, Matt Busby, was seriously injured. Busby eventually recovered and, in the 1960s, built a new team. In 1968, ten years after Munich, Manchester United became the first English team to win the European Cup.

Many notable footballers have represented the club. Manchester United players include Duncan Edwards, Bobby Charlton, Denis Law, George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Christiano Ronaldo.
